I am Sick! Our computer crashed this afternoon!

I knew it was going to happen - I just knew it! I was planning to back up our main home computer this past weekend but I got side tracked. I traveled for work today and when I got home I logged onto my email, got dinner going, and all of a sudden a loud, horrible noise started coming from the family room. Initially we thought it was the wood stove fan but nope - it was our computer! I think I am actually beyond sick - I don't even want to think about all of the pictures, emails, blog favorites, etc. that have been lost. I will admit we've had the computer since November of 2001 and we've been lucky that it has lasted this long but still ...

If anyone has any suggestions on how to retrieve files please let me know. Also, if anyone has any suggestions on what we should be considering for a new desk top I'm all ears. Our computer was a Gateway. I'm not much of a techie but we paid a lot of $$ for it in 2001 and it had all the bells, whistles, and memory of that time.

If you are reading this and a regular - please post a message or email me so that I have your contact info. Thanks.

I know this picture has nothing to do with this post but I'm using my laptop tonight and my 3-Day Walk pictures are just about all that I have saved here! This is my best friend Lisa and I at the end of the Michigan 3-Day this past September. I need to get my butt in gear to get ready for this year's walk in Dallas :)

Sorry to rant - I just needed vent.

Oh man! I'd be sick too! I have no idea on how to retrieve files so can't help you there.

I have a google account and use google picasa to store all my photos and I use google reader to keep up with all the blogs I read.

what a bummer! I don't know if this info will help you or not as I don't know if your hard drive fried or not. But my computer crashed 2 years ago. I was very lucky as someone told me to remove the hard drive and put it in an external hard drive enclosure and hook it up to the new computer. Wallaaaaaa there were all my files on the old hard drive. I carefully scanned everything to make sure there were no viruses and left everything there so I could access it whenenver I wanted to. Hope this helps. Good luck!

So sorry - that stinks big time. Dell is good and you can customize it online. I have a Dell laptop. I never backup - probably should. I do have a backup battery so if the power goes out the computer stays on for 20-30 minutes so I can shut it down. Good luck!!

Oh, the hoorors!!! With my previous computer I lived in constant fear that it would go up in smoke taking my real life with it. I was going to also suggest an external hard drive. My new computer is an IBM -- smooth as butter.

I will say that the new software systems, like Publisher and Word, are all glitz and little go. I was so unhappy with Publisher that I searched on line and found an older version. Happy at last.

I'm so sorry your computer crashed -- I hope you can get all your files back.
